Septic systems, also known as on-site wastewater treatment systems (OWTS), have historically been used in sparsely developed areas or where municipal wastewater collection and treatment were impractical. This was also true within the Cherry Creek Basin.

As communities grew in size and population density, many properties served by OWTS connected to sewer. Sewer service continues to expand; however, some areas will remain reliant on OWTS for the foreseeable future.

OWTS should not be treated as “out of sight, out of mind”. Property owners must be mindful of what gets put into them and the need for periodic maintenance. With proper use, routine care, and maintenance, an OWTS can function effectively and last for many years.
