Shop Creek Water Quality Improvements

A white bird standing on a sandy riverbank with branches in the foreground.

This legacy project dates to 1988 and comprises the first capital construction funded by the Authority. Regional water quality monitoring had pointed to Shop Creek as the major contributor of phosphorus to Cherry Creek reservoir, a nutrient linked to harmful algal blooms in the reservoir. The improvements stabilized the eroding creek and created an upstream pond followed by a series of wetlands to immobilize phosphorus. A parallel trail provides access for users to enter the Park and enjoy the rich riparian habitat along Shop Creek.
